Godfrey Philipo, M.D, MPH, MGSC | Chief Research and Implementation Scientist (CRIS)


Dr. Godfrey Sama Philipo is an MD working at ECSA HC as a Research Coordinator supporting the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA). Dr Philipo completed his Doctor of Medicine training at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Tanzania, a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Southern Medical University (SMU) in China, a Master of Global Surgical Care (MGSC) from the University of British Columbia (UBC), and a Global Surgery Fellowship from the Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia (CHESA) at UCSF.

He has received training in Implementation Science from UCSF and the Center for Implementation Science. He is an Adjunct Lecture at the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC), UBC and Honorary Lecturer at MUHAS Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Prior to joining ECSA HC, Dr Philipo worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator for the MUHAS-ORCI-UCSF Cancer Collaboration at MUHAS, Tanzania, mainly responsible for the Breast Cancer Project and implementation of Surgical Simulation Project.
Dr Philipo has done research on Children Surgery Research in Tanzania, in collaboration with the University of Oxford and the German Society for Global and Tropical Surgery

These project received funding from National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), National Institute of Health (NIH), The Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation (EKFS), The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) and the Coalition for Implementation Research in Global Oncology (CIRGO). He supported Kids Operation Room (KidsOR) to developing National Plans to strengthen pediatric surgical services in Uganda and Botswana.

Dr Philipo was a co-Coordinator the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA) Global Surgery Small Working Group, and co-founded the International Students Surgical Network (InciSioN). He is a member and researcher with the TINY Tanzania Network, a group of researchers and clinicians from 13 regional hospitals of Tanzania leading the implementation science part of the project aiming at improving outcomes of babies born with gastroschisis.
